The 1st Inaugural Diaspora General Assembly: The University Invite

The Diaspora General Assembly Town Meeting This year, a central focus will be the “Diaspora General Assembly Town Meeting.” Building on the recognition of the Diaspora Economy, this specific town hall will invite world leaders (particularly from countries with significant diaspora populations or those seeking diaspora investment) to address and engage with:

  • Students and academics interested in migration, development, and global economics.
  • Members of diaspora communities in New York and the Tri-State area.
  • Representatives from diaspora organizations, businesses, and cultural groups.

This session will explore the critical role of diaspora communities in global development, investment, and cultural exchange, offering a unique opportunity for direct dialogue between leaders and the diaspora on issues such as remittances, diaspora bonds, entrepreneurial initiatives, and cultural preservation.

Target Audience:

  • Speakers: Heads of State, Prime Ministers, Ministers, Ambassadors, UN Officials, and other high-level delegates attending UNGA 2025.
  • Attendees: University students (undergraduate and graduate), faculty, academic researchers, local community members, diaspora community leaders, civil society representatives, and interested public.

Program Components (Proposed):

  1. Keynote Address/Opening Remarks:
    • A world leader or UN dignitary delivers a speech on a relevant global issue (e.g., climate action, peacebuilding, economic development, human rights, or the role of the diaspora).
  2. Town Hall Q&A Session:
    • An interactive segment where students and community members can directly ask questions of the visiting leader. This is the core of the “town meeting” format.
  3. Moderated Discussion:
    • A faculty member or student leader moderates the session, ensuring a diverse range of questions and facilitating productive dialogue.
  4. Panel Discussions (Optional):
    • For some sessions, multiple leaders or experts might participate in a panel format, offering varied perspectives.
  5. Networking Opportunities (Optional):
    • Informal reception or meet-and-greet allowing for further engagement between leaders and attendees.

Anticipated Outcomes:

  • Increased Engagement: Significantly broaden the reach and impact of UNGA discussions beyond traditional diplomatic circles.
  • Youth Empowerment: Inspire and equip the next generation of global leaders, policymakers, and activists.
  • Community Connection: Strengthen the bond between the UN and the local New York community, fostering a sense of shared responsibility for global issues.
  • New Perspectives: Provide world leaders with direct insights into the concerns and aspirations of youth and local communities.
  • Media Visibility: Generate positive media coverage, highlighting the UN’s commitment to transparency and direct engagement.
  • Specific Outcomes for Diaspora GA: Foster stronger connections between national governments and their diaspora communities, potentially leading to new policy initiatives or investment opportunities.
